Classroom on the Coast is a unique chance to learn how to cook fish right in the heart of one of Britain’s oldest fishing communities.
This purpose built, fully equipped cookery school sits only yards from the famous Hastings fleet where fish has been landed for over 1000 years. The 25 boats that sit on the shingle shore make up Europe’s largest beach landed fishing fleet – the perfect backdrop to learn the skills needed to prepare and cook freshly caught fish.
Filleting skills, preserving techniques, restaurant standard recipes to recreate at home, cooking lesser known but delicious alternatives to popular, sometimes overfished species and most importantly to roll up your sleeves and get cooking. It’s a hands-on experience for all; learn closely guarded cooking tips from experienced chefs and build a foundation for anyone with ambitions to follow a career in cooking or those who simply want to cook beautiful tasting food.
Classroom on the Coast was completed in early 2014 with funding from the Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG). Its purpose is to support the Hastings Fishing fleet by teaching people of all ages about the fish available right on the doorstep, ignite an appreciation and love for fish and to give people the skills and confidence to cook fish in their everyday lives all under the guidance of a professional chef.
The cookery school has a fully functioning commercial kitchen with workstations where up to a dozen students can learn hands-on cookery skills at individual induction hobs. Alternatively it has room for up to 30 for group exercises or a sit down audience for cookery demonstrations held from a large workstation at the rear with a large built-in hob, ovens and sinks.
