The first Herring Fair was held in November 2012. It opened up a new market for the fishing fleet and had good food, music and gifts.
Hastings Herring Fair overcame some notable competition in winning the Billingsgate Sustainable Seafood Award. It gave national endorsement to the Hastings artisanal fleet for the responsible sourcing of this lesser known or less used fish species. The award provided a valuable opportunity to advertise the fishery, fishing methods and of course herring. There was wide coverage in industry media as well as local print and TV coverage all of which boosted attendance at the Fair and despite terrible weather over 5,000 people attended.
